Backpack Project

NCJW/Greater Detroit annually provides 1000 backpacks to Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program. Volunteers are needed to help sort and pack backpacks annually in August. One day the school supplies are unpacked and organized and the next day the backpacks are filled. Everyone of all ages are welcome to help fill the backpacks.

2011 Article: Homeless students to get school supply-filled backpacks

This worthwhile endeavor ensures that many homeless students, kindergarten through twelfth grade in Oakland County, are able to enter school in the fall with colorful new backpacks filled with new school supplies. The program is coordinated through Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program.

Volunteers, including children and grandchildren spend two fun-filled days setting up and filling the backpacks. To volunteer for either day or both days call (248) 355-3300, ext. 0
